Useful Office Lessons from Chinese Street-Vendor Sales Persistence

Useful Office Lessons from Chinese Street-Vendor Sales Persistence In pursuit of a deal, how much persistence is too much? Selling and sales resistance are like a river and its bankmora or less inseparable, even though the former is always exerting an eroding force on the latter. Also, like a rushing river, high-pressure selling is immer und ewig, indeed relentless and often suffocating. For a given level of (un)interest in what is being pitched, why will persistence inconsistently pay offsometimes closing the deal, other times closing it off? In answering these questions, it may be very important to bedrngnise the difference between the duration of persistence and its rules. Often, the rules and factors of persistence determine the outcome mora than the time invested. For schooling in such rules and factors of persistence, a very good distributions-mix to start is where I traveled in 2012 the stre ets of China.Souvenirs of SouvenirsOf course, visiting any tourist area anywhere in the world means running gauntlets of vendors and touts. That comes with the holiday territory. Here in Yangshuo, a magnificent karst-mountain ringed, Li River-side sleeping beauty that has been awakened by the kiss of tourism, this once sleepy town has been transformed into a national treasure and souvenir of itself.By this, I mean that, at some point, anyone with open eyes and a logical mind should notice the very peculiar paradox of salesmanship here The locals sell souvenirs as souvenirs of the tourists experience of souvenirs. What, before the selling starts, look like charming lanes, peaceful promenades and quaint narrow streets, have been transformed into crowded souvenir shooting galleries, in which the trinket vendors take their best shot at the shuffling tourists foolish enough to slow to a near sitting-duck halt. There are so many stalls, vendors and souvenirs leaching into the streets that the only experience to survive as a memory of surviving that gauntlet is that of passing, eyeing, dodging, handling, haggling over and buying or refusing souvenirs.Grandmotherly Lessons in PersistenceGiven that this can be a tough sell, the sales techniques have to be very goodor very desperate. Here in Yangshuo, persistence, and lots of it, is a bit of both. What is interesting from the recruitment standpointsince, after all, selling is a form of recruiting, namely, of customers and clientsis how often it works and how often it fails. Even mora interesting is why.You dont have to be selling souvenirs to appreciate how persistence is often necessary and how it can badly backfire or wonderfully succeed. It has worked and failed with me as the target in about equal proportions. Reflecting on why the deal has been sealed in some cases but not others, when my interest level in the souvenir welches equaloften equally negligible, I have speculated that the outcome of sale vs. no sale has been determined by factors and rules of persistence unrelated to whatever interest I had at the start or end of the pitch. The supply background vs. the demand background Think of supply and demand (in this instance of dealing with a souvenir vendor or, for that matter, with anyone who is persistent) in terms of the supply and demand psychological, social and economic backgrounds. These are like the two appearances of a Necker cubethe cube that appears to be receding to the left or to the right, depending on which orientation seems more obvious at the moment. When I resist the persistence, it often is because I am focusing on my demand-side considerations, e.g., I dont need it, dont want it, could find it more cheaply elsewhere and have no friend who would want it as a gift. Perceived only through this supply-side filter, the persistence quickly becomes annoying. On the other hand, if I shift to supply-side considerations, e.g.,why anyone would persist not only in this particular sal es pitch, but also in this jobhow much the little money it costs will viscerally mean to the vendorhow the supply of feasible alternatives may be very limited for the sellerhow many mouths will be fed by the sale of a trinkethow much of a rest the stooped 80-year-old flower vendor could earn for herself with one saleI am more likely to buyespecially since, set against the backdrop of such supply-side constraints and pathos, the greater the persistence, the greater the likelihood of a sale, since the persistence is perceived as a measure of need and desperation, rather than as cause or measure of increasing resistance and annoyance.Back home, the same principle can be applied in the office, as well as the street to make the sale, to snag the client or the candidate, consider whether or not there are some supply-side background factors unrelated to the need for or quality of what you are selling that will seal the deal. Work those into your presentation, or otherwise make them apparen t.For example, in pitching a job, it might be useful to insinuate into the presentation the effort it takes to have adequately presented such a huge and diversified company. In attempting to stimulate candidate demand, the presentation actually also smuggles in an indication of the considerable supply-side effort that went into it, to create respect and empathy for the recruiter.2. Persistent effort vs. persistent pitch Persistence in the effort to sell something is one thing persistence in using an unvarying pitch or angle is quite another. Irrespective of whether a supply or demand backdrop perspective is operative, persistence of effort with/without persistence of pitch can be a determining factor in whether or not the vendor can clinch a deal.Apart from the freshness of varying the spiel while persisting, the charm, intelligence and entertainment factors in a varying sales presentation that is no less persistent in duration than a merely repetitive sales chant may be enough to t ilt the scales into the buy zone. Moreover, varying the argument for the pitch may succeed where grinding repetition will fail, much as drilling for oil in more than one place usually does. The difference is that between a shift to looking for a soft spot and wearing down a rock of resistance by trying to drill through it.As a bonus, the wit, charm, intelligence, grit or creativity manifested in a medley of sales pitches delivered with the persistence of a mongoose tackling a cobra can come across as proof that financially contributing to the preservation of such an engaging vendors genes is a good investment in the human gene pool.3. Self-satisfaction vs. guilt Reassuring ourselves we are nobodys fool can be an enormously satisfying experience (and, as an emotional objective, one of the driving forces behind haggling and bargain hunting everywhere in the world). For persistence to cause a prospective buyer to give that up and instead buy requires emotionally remotivating him or her, through a motivational reversal not unlike that described in Michael Apters metamotivational reversal theory (which I have elsewhere cited as a dynamic behavioral model governing the interactions of a stick-fetching dog and its master). In terms of reversal theory, persistence can succeed if it causes a switch from mastery to sympathywhich is equivalent to a shift from being nobodys fool to being sympathetic or compassionate.According to the theory, all of us act, feel and shift along various spectra defined by four polar opposites, viz., serious-playful, masterful-sympathetic, conforming-rebellious and autic-alloic (self-interested vs. altruistic) . To make persistence pay off, talent for inducing such a shift or a spontaneous shift in perception really helps. For example, with consistent indifference to buying passion fruit from a cone hat-festooned womans 120-pound load of various fruit, I was nudged into the guilt zone when I focused on the fact that the weight she was carrying in her basket pole surpassed hers. I bought five. That was a case of a reversal in perception.Another very old woman, obviously well into her late 70s or even maybe her 80s, got me to change my mind and jump from the self-satisfaction pole of the spectrum to the guilt and compassion pole by doing one simple, primal thing softly misting over. Her far-too-tired eyes went bleary, as though on the verge of weeping. It seemed spontaneous to me, but when, in other instances, it isnt, its precisely the kind of deal-making talent that can induce a metamotivational reversal from mastery to sympathy.4. (Un)Skillful use of sub-text In any sales narrative, there is much more going on than pure sales presentation and persuasion. As important as the need or desire for the product or service, the costs and benefits of these, the clarity of the information presented, the convenience of the timing, the reputation of what is being sold and the vendor, there is the X-factor how we feel about the seller ( in addition to or instead of pity for their supply-side circumstances). Most importantly, as everyone knows, but many forget, making the prospective customer or client like you (in the sense of enjoying you, rather than becoming like you) helpsa lot.One especially persistent vendor got me to buy a souvenir photo album of Guilin by, in effect, pretending she was deaf or that I was mute, charmingly ignoring all of my reasons for not buying. She never, unlike almost all stall vendors, attempted to counter my points instead, she merely sidestepped them, gently papering them over with more soft spiel. She got the sale because she sold me on her. Her clever indifference to what I was saying was the sub-text of our narrative, and in the end the message that successfully got across to me.(A few days later, I gave that book to another much older grandmother struggling to sell oranges downriver, encouraging her to resell ita case of what comes around, goes around.)In this respect, itinerant Chi nese vendors are among the best at making me receptive to them. The stall vendors are pretty good too, but are far more scrappy and vociferous, like noisy carnival touts. Bad combination abrasiveness and persistence.Although far from any corporate office, the low-key wandering vendors, on the other hand, mostly follow many rules of executive-level business practice, while following some framed for the streetalways be politespeak softly or confidentlysustain eye contactremain physically non-threatening (e.g., by approaching slowly, avoiding overly expansive gestures and maintaining a friendly smile and posturelimiting the gestures to persistent product thrusting and dangling)look long-suffering, but not overly self-pityingdo not employ entrapmentgiving the product and then demanding paymentpersist, but accept no when given either a real reason for it or a cold adamant brush-off.Most of these can be adapted or refined for productive application in urban offices.5. Bait and Switch In i ts customary usage, bait and switch means hooking a sales prospect with one thing before switching the pitch to another (usually costlier product or service). However, there is a second sense of bait and switch very germane to the art and rules of successful persistence. It is the idea that, while baitingin the sense of arguing with or relentlessly houndinga prospect, at some point it will be smart to switch from baiting (in this confrontational sense) to something completely different. Specifically, it is a switch to an approach that is less likely to trigger a defensive response, e.g., to a mention of some previously unstated benefits of the product or service not covered in the defensive rationalizations and objections of the prospective buyer. The great danger in trying to overcome the stated objections of prospects is that they are likely to become even more adamant, because of the theirpride (in always being or trying to be right)cognitive dissonance reduction (manifested as a tendency to minimize, ignore or counter the counter-objections to the sale)resentment (of perceived aggressiveness)irritation (in being repeatedly contradicted and/or with the unvarying argumentative sales approach).Although the street vendors of Yangshuo need no encouragement to be persistent or much coaching in how to do it well, many of the rest of us need both, and not only on the supply side of things. In particular, sometimes we have to learn how to (intelligently) persist on the demand side of our livesfor example, to learn how to persist in considering whether or not to make a buy (e.g., of a stock, to ensure weve carefully and thoroughly considered it).The same goes for this analysis of persistence. If youre not sold on it, dont give up just yet. Try a little harder and longer.Your persistence just might pay off.at least for me.___________________Note This is one in a series of articles by Michael Moffa on the scene and on the job in China.Photo The Art of Persistence (Mich ael Moffa)

How to Respond When a Recruiter Emails

How to Respond When a Recruiter EmailsHow to Respond When a Recruiter Emails Picture yourself in this scenario you get a bedrngnislageification on your phone that you have a new message. You quickly check the notification and find out that you have a LinkedIn message. When you head over to LinkedIn, you realize that you have been contacted by a recruiter who reached out to you about a job opportunity . What happens? Most likely, you are excited that someone would actually reach out directly to you and thinks that you are the perfect fit for a job at their organization, but then your excitement slowly starts to fade perhaps due to the fact that you already have another job that you love or perhaps because the job being offered does not have terms favorable to youDue to todays tight job market, recruiters will reach out to candidates more often than they used to. However, as the person on the receiving end of a recruiters message, how you respond is very important. He res how to make the most of the unique opportunity in front of you.1. Negotiate the offer Since you are the one being pursued, it will be more easy to determine the terms of your engagement. Just because someone made you an offer does not mean you should accept it as-is. This is the right time to negotiate the offer you can negotiate any part of the job including your salary, your position, your benefits, as well as work conditions.2. Use the offer to negotiate better terms at your current job Even if youre satisfied with your current job, an offer from a recruiter could be a blessing in disguise. Depending on the terms of the job, particularly if more attractive than that of your current job, you can use it to negotiate better terms with your current employers. If they see that attempts are being made to poach you from them, they are likely to put in more incentives to retain you this could be used to negotiate a better salary, better work terms, a promotion , or better benef its .3. Build a relationship Even if you are not interested in the job offer, be polite in all your interactions and attempt to build a relationship. The recruiter who reached out to you can prove useful in more than the organization the recruiter is reaching out from. By doing everything to ensure there is a relationship (being polite even if you have to reject the offer, referring someone else if you are not available for the offer, and checking in every once in a while), you are positioning yourself for better future career prospects. Its easy to get overconfident when a recruiter reaches out to you, but it is very important to avoid the following pitfalls1. Avoid assuming that being contacted by a recruiter means automatic employment If you think being contacted by a recruiter means automatic employment, you might want to reassess your opinion. While being contacted by a recruiter gives you an edge, it doesnt guarantee employment. Instead of resting on your laurels, you shoul d double your efforts and put your best foot forward. It is important to avoid being casual in your approach and response to the recruiter. Polish your portfolio and job materials, emphasize the unique advantage you will give the organization that wants to employ you, and be professional and polite in your interactions with the recruiter. 2. Avoid assuming that youre the only person being considered for the job opportunity One of the worst pitfalls you can fall into when a recruiter reaches out to you is that of assuming that you are the only person the recruiter reached out to - or assuming that you are the only person being considered for the job.According to Simonetta Lein , CEO of the Simonetta Lein brand, Vice President of The Wishwall Foundation , and one of the top 100 fashion influencers in the world, One of the biggest mistakes candidates make when recruiters contact them out of the blue is that of assuming that they are the only one being considered for the job. Due to this wrong assumption, says Lein, they put in little effort into preparing and positioning themselves for the opportunity and often end up losing it. She advises reacting to a recruitment offer sent to you as you would do if you had sent a job application - as if you are one of many candidates.3. Dont make the mistake of not putting effort into your job materials You should also avoid the pitfall of not putting enough effort into your job materials. According to Alex Jasin, the founder and CEO of Metapress , When a recruiter reaches out to you is when you should double up on your effort and polish your job materials. Jasin says this is important for a few key reasons, One, it helps the recruiter justify the decision to reach out to you and makes the decision to hire you easier. Two, just because a recruiter reached out to you doesnt mean the recruiter will be making the hiring decision - the recruiter could be very excited about you, and communicate this excitement to other deci sion makers, but its your materials that will really do the job.So what materials do you want to focus on? The usual ones you would be focusing on if you were the one seeking the job 4. Dont completely ignore the recruiter While you might be at a job you love, it isnt necessarily a good idea to completely ignore the recruiter. You might not need the job right now, but the future is largely unpredictable even if you are at a satisfied job, Ayodeji Onibalusi, CEO of Effective Inbound Marketing , says it wont be wise to just ignore the recruiter Your company could downsize in the near future and you could lose your job, you could get laid off, or you might later decide you need better career prospects. He further says,Just because youre at your dream job does not mean youre guaranteed to be at that job forever. It is always wise to think with the future in mind. So, even if the opportunity isnt a right fit now, what do you do?

5 timeless words of career advice from former presidents

5 timeless words of career advice from former presidents5 timeless words of career advice from former presidentsBefore becoming the leaders of the free world, nearly every president had to work his way up the corporate ladder, learning plenty of lessons along the way.Among the 45 who held the title of Mr. President, their career paths varied greatly, offering a vast amount of diversity in skill sets and talents. While our inaugural leader George Washington worked as a surveyor, Ronald Reagan was an actor, William Howard Taft was a lawyer and Barack Obama worked as an education consultant among other gigs.Arguably, all would credit President of the United States as their toughest, most demanding role, since it provided them with helpful wisdom. Luckily for you, theyve shared the tough lessons from the oval office, giving you a bit of studying material for your long weekend aheadThink before you speakThe first president of the United States, George Washington wrote a guidebook about pu blic discourse and protocol, appropriately titled Rules of Civility and Decent Behavior in Company and Conversation. In here, he gives many points and perspectives on how to maturely and effectively handle yourself in corporate or professional settings. In addition to recommending to keep your face to the back when youre speaking and using positive body language, he also recommended thorough thought and consideration before speaking. Its a rule of thumb likely ingrained into your psyche thanks to your parents, but one that holds true in all boardroom meetings or even digitally, in e-mail exchanges. He wrote, Think before you speak, pronounce not imperfectly, nor bring out your words too hastily, but orderly and distinctly.Associate yourself with people smarter than youAs an Army general, statesman and the 34th president of the United States, Dwight Eisenhower had much experience both listening to elders and leading youngsters. Regardless of his rank though, he quickly learned the imp ortance of the company you keep, as it shapes not only your reputation but your ability progress. Its not that you shouldnt befriend the funniest person in the office since they will fill the sometimes mundane hours of a workday, but making a pointed choice to spend quality time with those you respect will feed more inspiration into your career. Eisenhower explained in his book, Always try to associate yourself with and learn as much as you can from those who know more than you do, who do better than you, who see more clearly than you.If youre intimidated by scheduling a meeting with your CMO or your top executive because they may stump you with questions, Eisenhower has a solution for that, too. When you cant quite rack your brain for the smartest retort, be confident in admitting defeat, since it illustrates your integrity and character. As he wrote, Remember, I dont know, is one of the smartest things you can say, and once you do, you can find the experts you need.Take time to de liberate. Then goEspecially when your industry requires a fast-paced, quick-witted and on-the-go attitude, you might feel the pressure of hastily decision-making. When the time and client turnaround does allow though, soldier, statesman and the seventh president emphasizes the importance of careful consideration. Because the smartest solutions usually come from weighing options, identifying risks and estimating outcomes regardless if youre leading a war or creating an end-of-year strategy its the pause that can elevate your career. Jackson was quoted in the book, Supplement to the Courant also providing the advice for what to do once youve arrived at your choice Take time to deliberate but when the time for action arrives, stop thinking and go in.After all, why wouldnt you go full-force ahead in your presentation, the contract, or your proposal if youve actually taken the break you needed to gain confidence?Your own resolution to succeed is more important than any other one thingA sk your first boss at your internship, or your brothers friend who you find so utterly impressive. Chat with your mom, your dad, your sorority sister. Regardless of whose advice you seek, everyone will have a different view on what it means to be successful. As one of the most legendary and visionary presidents, our 16th leader Abraham Lincoln was ripe with profound insight, making his speeches timelessly quotable. But one that should stick out in your mind as you map out your own pioneering path is to departure from within. In a kind-hearted, pointed letter to a pal, Lincoln signed off with the following, Always bear in mind that your own resolution to succeed, is more important than any other one thing. In other words no matter what nuggets of wisdom you hear or find, maintaining a sense of self-determination will take you further than any other tactic or strategy.Nothing in the world can take the place of persistenceWhen you were first rejected for a role that you wholeheartedly t hought you had in the bag, the sting surely isnt pleasant. Though disappointment is part of the job searching and career-building tango, your ability to push past your shortcoming or downfalls is what will set you apart from others eying the same opportunity. As one of the most infamous words from a president that youll often hear during college graduation speeches, lawyer and 30th U.S. president Calvin Coolidge speaks to the deep importance of stamina, regardless of what rat race youre jogging. It read, Nothing in the world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent. Genius will not unrewarded genius is almost a proverb Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent. The odd truth of this popular quote is the original context is still being researched, even though it appeared on the cover of the program for his memorial service in 1933. Regardless if he said it in full or it was fragmented between a variety of spe eches, the value remains the same working tirelessly without giving up will extend your career more than anything else.

Bad Idea at Work - The Muse

Bad Idea at Work - The MuseBad Idea at WorkIf I had a durstlscher filled with fingers, I still couldnt count the number of badeanstalt ideas Ive been involved in at work. Another trunk filled with toes, maybe, and wed be getting close.Bad ideas are unavoidable in business simply because people are fallible. Yes- including you.Agendas, pressures, fears, and motivations combine in a steamy soup that bubbles away with decisions both good and bad.But what happens when youre the one who can spot those bad decisions? What happens when you can see that the bridge is out when everyone else is pumping more coal into the furnace? When you find yourself faced with bad ideas from your babo and colleagues, here are your options.Speak UpThe very thought of sitting in front of your boss and telling him or her that you think he or she is wrong is scary enough to make you keep your mouth shut- but sometimes, you have to suck it up and do the right thing.Your success in speaking up depends completely o n your method of delivery. So, instead of mouthing off and coming across as negative- which no boss in the world likes- try positioning your thinking more constructively. For example, you could say, Hey Larry, you know how were building that robot with super-advanced artificial intelligence and giving it guns for hands? Is there a sense that this might lead to robo-carnage? Perhaps wed be better served by giving it robot fingers instead. When you offer your sense of a situation, youre not deliberately telling anyone that theyre wrong or starting from a place of conflict. Youre simply offering an alternate point of view- a different perspective that might serve everyone better.Perform a Pre-MortemIf something goes awry or a project doesnt have the intended effect, many organizations will perform a post-mortem- or, in other words, a post-project review- to figure out what went wrong and determine how to prevent a similar situation from happening again in the future.Personally, I think these are about useful as making ukuleles for fish (no fingers, see?). More useful is the pre-mortem.At the start of a project, whether its the launch a new product or service, a process change, or a business innovation, hold a pre-project review with the appropriate team of people and talk about what could happen that would derail the assignment. What are the things that could make it fail? What would prevent you from doing great work on this project? How might someone involved royally screw up?You dont have to be a doom-monger, but working through a pre-mortem allows you to establish strategies to absprache with the most likely issues- such as shifting priorities, recruiting other team members to fill skill gaps, and mitigating uncertainty. A little proactive damage control can shine a light on bad decisions before theyre even made.Deal With ItNobody likes a Negative Nancy, and having someone on your team who constantly moans about all the bad decisions is bad news for everybody ( especially Nancy). So if things are already going a little pear-shaped, sometimes you have to simply get on board and deal with it. Instead of whining about the problem to anyone wholl listen, get your team around a table and work through possible solutions. Come up with an idea to navigate through a delicate situation rather than putting your head in the sand. Work with the people around you instead of spewing a righteous I told you so.Even if you were right about the bad idea from the get-go, have the courage to let go of your need to be right and get involved in finding the best way through.Walk AwayIts natural for your peers and leaders to make bad decisions and for organizations to head down the wrong path from time to time. But theres a big difference between that and a toxic environment where bad decisions and the resulting fallout are the norm. Some bosses suck, and some workplaces are filled with a lot of wasted energy and a whole lot of hot air, and that can result in an env ironment where youll spend more time patching up bad decisions than doing great work. That leaves you with a choice to make stick around or walk away?Id suggest that the line in the sand is where its clear that the companys decisions defy your personal values- for example, a discriminatory recruitment practice, a business restructure based on greed rather than value, or crushing creativity in favor of certainty. Sure, you can try to influence things, but sometimes its right, appropriate, and even brave to get out.Sometimes, the most courageous response to a truly bad idea is to go do something better.Photo of sign courtesy of Shutterstock.

5 Ways to Find Success at Work, According to Dirty Jobs Mike Rowe

5 Ways to Find Success at Work, According to Dirty Jobs Mike Rowe5 Ways to Find Success at Work, According to Dirty Jobs Mike RoweTV host Mike Rowe has made a career bringing dirty jobs to light. By getting down and, well, dirty on the job, hes learned what motivates people to do some of the most undesirable jobs out there. (Think roadkill collector, septic tank cleaner, and fish processor.) Now you can find him on CNN for his series Somebodys Gotta Do It, Sundays at 10 PM ET/PT.And along the way, hes picked up a few lessons on succeeding in the workplace that everyone can embrace- whether your current position requires a hazmat suit or just an extra sweater because the AC is always on. 1. Dream Jobs Are DreamsRowe says weve been sold a little white lie. We think that in bestellung to be satisfied at work, we think we need to find the right job. Thats a fundamental mistake, he says. What were really looking for is meaningful work. Once we can accept that, we can move toward finding s omething that pays us what we need and gives us the opportunity to engage. So, the tricks not necessarily following your dream, but finding out what kind of work will actually be fulfilling to you. By looking at it this way, youre opening up lots of options. If Rowe followed his dreams, he wouldve followed in his grandfathers footsteps- a plumber and steamfitter who could have built a house without a blueprint. He had that kind of talent and instinct, according to Rowe. Realizing he wasnt very good at it forced Rowe to find happiness where he landed. And that, as we know, led to great success2. Lower Your ExpectationsTheres a reason why, statistically speaking, couples in arranged marriages are happier than those who have chosen their own mate for love. This is a concept outlined by Barry Schwartz in his book of the same name. The mora choices there are, the more you expect to find a perfect fit yet, at the same time, the larger the array, the less likely it becomes that you picked the best item. Rowe says its the same with careers. You expect that picking the right partner- or the right car, or the right job- will make you happy. If you dont expect any more from the job than the paycheck, the odds of finding satisfaction go up. Job satisfaction has nothing to do with the job. Were not advising you to accept poor working conditions or bad treatment. But take a look at your situation and ask yourself if youre waiting for your dream job to come along, or if you can find something worthwhile in your current position. If you keep pining for a job thatll fulfill everything you want in a career, youre never going to find it. 3. Take the Road Less TraveledSpend the first year of your job making your boss look smart. Volunteer for the work that no one else wants to do. Rowe says that finding the sweet spot where no one else really wants to be could be the ticket to success. This is how the people who repel deep into faults in the earth searching for opal in Australia end up finding fulfillment and success. They do what no one else wants to do. And theres a sense of pride in just that.Dont take yourself or what you thought you would be doing so seriously. Be willing to be flexible with your vision. Look around. See where everyone is going. If you go the opposite direction, you increase your odds of finding an opportunity. 4. Know Your Value- Even if Others DontYou might never be appreciated as much as you should be, even if youre saving lives. Rowe explains, Septic tank cleaners know that society goes off the rails without them. But, they also know people dont think twice about their work.
